Apocalypse Has Its Mutants, Korra’s (Temporarily) Back, and Penny’s Been Pushed — Nerd Girl Corner

I’m back, ladies and gents. Yes, I know it’s been almost a month since I last wrote to you and yes, I feel deeply sorry about it. I’m already starting the year off bad, but I promise you — it was not done in vain. I’ve got some pretty exciting projects in the wings, one of which will definitely rock the socks of some of your readers. But, let’s move on to tonight’s post, shall we?

As the title suggests, the upcoming X-Men flick, X-Men: Apocalypse has cast the actors who will play the younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm. If you can recall, about a month ago, Latino-Review got its hands on the list of Hollywood yougins testing for the spot and the results are as follows:

Mud’s Tye Sheridan is Cyclops

Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner nabbed Jean

and last but not least, Aaliyah: Princess of R&B actress Alexandra Shipp is Storm.

Now, I know that some of you guys had a fit with the casting when the news broke — especially when it came to Alexandra being cast as Storm, but let’s not forget that one movie doesn’t make a person. Also, while Aaliyah wasn’t that great of a movie, it had it’s flaws from the jump. Second, the X-Men franchise hasn’t ever really given Storm much to do aside from glowing her eyes and changing the weather and these movies are more rooted in action than anything else. As long as Alex is athletic, fierce, and believably so, I think she’ll be good. Also, having spoken to Alex in the past (for Wetpaint Entertainment), she seems like a legitimately nice girl who’s trying to make her mark as an actress of color. So, hey. Give her a chance. Plus, she doing homework to get into the role. She scores points already.

Girl, dedicated. #storm

OH — for those stuck on how “light” she is, please remember that this movie is still in the universe where Halle Berry IS the older Storm… and unless Ororo “Storm” Monroe suffered from vitiligo sometime between the ’80s and the 2000’s, home girl needs to stay in the same color range.

Next order of business…

Legend of Korra is back, Korra Nation! Well, sort of. Nickelodeon dropped the news that all four seasons of Legend of Korra will be available online for viewing until February 16. Yay!!

Because of this, I figured that I would do a little recapping of the first three seasons, you know? Obviously, it will NOT be as in-depth as my previous recaps (which you can read here), but instead general over-arching recap/reviews of each season, broken up into 3-4 parts (depending on my mood). I intend on posting the recaps on BlackGirlNerds, with a double posting here on le blog for your consumption. I might even get a little postcappy with it, too!

And last but NOT least, my other TV obsession Penny Dreadful is coming back y’all! The trailer premiered and everything. If you don’t know already know, I get my Penny Dreadful recapping life on for Black Girl Nerds as well, so I will be back at it for Season 2. Originally, the show was scheduled to return on April 26 at 10 P.M. on Showtime, however, the handlers have tweeted that it’ll be pushed back a week to it’s series premiere month of May.

Director James Hawes promises it’ll be worth the wait, but I ain’t scared. I mean, Eva Green’s back, so I’m good.

In case you haven’t been keeping up on the show, be sure to check out the recaps on Black Girl Nerds. I will also be posting a trailer breakdown (y’all know how I do) and a follow up post chock full with character updates and a spoiler or two in the next couple days. So, be ready to get yo lie (pun intended)!

That’s all I’ve got for you guys this week. I will do my darnedest to be back next week with a new post — be is a “What I’m Diggin’,” a listicle of some sort, or a Disney Headscratcher (which I’ve been slacking on). Be sure to let me know how you’re feeling about Apocalypse, Korra, or Penny in the comments or holla at me on le Twitter.
